Treeconomy vetted by Verra as a VM0047 Data Service Provider

Site-Specific Biomass Data for ARR Performance Benchmarks

By Carolina Amu Trujillo

Verra has named Treeconomy as a vetted data service provider (DSP) for VM0047, its methodology for Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR) projects. Read Verra’s announcement.

What this means for ARR developers

Under VM0047, a project’s carbon removals are measured against a performance benchmark. That benchmark is built from a stocking index: a satellite-based measure of how much biomass is on the land each year, inside the project and in matched control areas.

Verra’s vetting confirms that our approach to providing stocking index data meets VM0047’s benchmark requirements. Project developers can work with any provider whose approach Verra has already reviewed or can supply their own data. Each project and its data are still reviewed by Verra and an independent validation/verification body.

How we support VM0047 projects

Our stocking index data feeds our Dynamic Performance Benchmark, Project Site Eligibility and Carbon Projections assessments. With the Biomass Engine, we host the project’s model on our platform, Sherwood. The same model then supports the project from the first site check through to each verification, and its estimates improve as new field data is added.

The Dynamic Performance Benchmark is where developers most often need support. We match plots inside the project with control plots outside it that share the same biomass history, then check the match against the methodology’s statistical threshold.

We also support developers through validation and verification, answering VVB and other stakeholder questions on our outputs.

What sets our data apart

  • A model for each site. For every project, we train a biomass model on that site’s own data. It learns from satellite records that summarise large volumes optical and radar imagery, from NASA’s GEDI and ICESat-2 spaceborne LiDAR, and from the project’s field plots where they exist.

  • Biomass, not just an index. Our stocking index is aboveground biomass, so the same numbers that set the performance benchmark also feed carbon projections and monitoring.

  • Finer than required. VM0047 asks for a resolution finer than 30 m. Our maps are produced at 10 m, annually from 2017.

  • Uncertainty you can see. Every pixel carries its own uncertainty range, combined to give uncertainty for each stratum and for the project as a whole.

  • Validated with the best data available. Where a project has field plots, its model is tested on the project’s own held-out plots. Without them, it is checked against satellite lidar for the site and against test sites where its performance is known.

  • Global coverage. Our data covers forests worldwide, not only the tropics.

  • A track record on VM0047. We have delivered Dynamic Performance Benchmarks and site eligibility assessments for ARR projects for years. See our case studies

“We have been successfully supporting nature-based project developers with biomass data and dynamic performance benchmark assessments for years. Being vetted by Verra confirms that our approach meets VM0047’s requirements. That gives developers, investors and buyers more confidence in the data behind their projects, and we look forward to supporting more high-quality ARR projects through validation and verification.”
