LONDON, UK – Treeconomy today announces that Naturalis Biodiversity Center completed a repeat purchase of nature-based carbon removal (CDR) from Nattergal’s Boothby Wildland Project in Lincolnshire. Facilitated by Treeconomy, the deal marks the next phase of a collaboration dedicated to restoring natural processes and biodiversity at scale.
The move builds upon the landmark 2024 collaboration between Treeconomy, Naturalis, and nature restoration specialists Nattergal, securing a further €50,000 in carbon removal credits. This highlights Naturalis’ continued commitment to high-quality nature-based solutions that prioritise ecosystem recovery alongside carbon sequestration.
A Shared Vision for Long-Term Restoration
Following the initial 2024 pilot, Naturalis is extending its support for process-led rewilding. This repeat purchase funds a 50-year sequestration term (2020-2070) at the Boothby Wildland site, allowing for the deep restoration of complex habitats beyond traditional woodland.
To ensure the project meets rigorous environmental standards, restoration efforts are monitored using Treeconomy’s satellite biomass engine. This robust, data-driven framework utilises high-resolution remote sensing to directly measure Above-Ground Biomass (AGB), capturing scientific proof of physical growth across the entire landscape rather than relying on area-based estimations. By aligning high-integrity nature restoration with state-of-the-art monitoring technology, the collaboration ensures that the atmospheric benefits of the rewilding efforts are backed by a transparent and defensible view of the project's ongoing impact.
Elevating the Benchmark for Nature-Based Solutions
This forward purchase is designed to support high-quality rewilding with focus on long-term ecological impact. Key details include:
- Scientifically-Backed Monitoring: The project utilises Treeconomy’s satellite biomass models to track carbon increases across the landscape and ensure sequestration targets are met.
- Extended Durability: The purchase covers a 50-year sequestration term, ensuring the permanence of the restoration efforts.
- High-Integrity Outcomes: The value of the credits reflects the rigorous digital measurement, reporting and verification (dMRV) and the significant biodiversity co-benefits associated with rewilding.
- Buffer allocation: Naturalis retains an additional allocation from the project’s carbon buffer, providing long-term security for their carbon removal claims.
Harry Grocott, CEO and Co-Founder of Treeconomy, commented:
"We are proud to continue our collaboration with Naturalis and Nattergal. This repeat purchase demonstrates the growing importance of long-term financial signals in the nature restoration sector. By supporting projects with robust monitoring and clear ecological goals, institutional leaders like Naturalis are helping to scale high-integrity solutions that benefit both the climate and biodiversity".
Marcel Beukeboom, Director-General of Naturalis Biodiversity Center:
"Our mission is to research and protect biodiversity for our future, worldwide. We do have to travel for this work, thus causing emissions. We are pleased that, thanks to our collaboration with Treeconomy, we have been able to offset our emissions for 2024. By supporting this initiative we encourage projects that aim to get insights into the impact of conservation and restoration methods."
Claire Traynor, Chief Commercial Officer at Nattergal, commented:
“We are pleased to be expanding our collaboration with Naturalis and Treeconomy in order to provide biodiverse-rich carbon credits from Boothby Wildland. Appetite for high-integrity carbon sequestration with co-benefits for nature and communities is growing, alongside a willingness to support projects through premium, viable prices for these outcomes. Naturalis are at the forefront of this trend"
Aligning with Global Standards
The Boothby Wildland project is currently undergoing registration with the UK Land Carbon Code (UKLCC) and validation by the Soil Association. Treeconomy’s dMRV technology provides the high-precision data required for this accreditation, offering third-party assurance that restoration efforts deliver measurable atmospheric benefits.
