Reflecting on a remarkable year for our company

As we wrap up an eventful year, we take immense pride and gratitude in looking back at the milestones and successes that have defined Treeconomy’s journey throughout 2023. This year has been a testament to our unwavering commitment to enabling and scaling up nature restoration through innovation, partnerships, and dedicated efforts.
Here is what we’ve been up to!

Welcoming Exceptional Talent

This year was marked by the addition of outstanding individuals to our team. We welcomed Matt as our Science Lead, leveraging his extensive knowledge as an interdisciplinary researcher and environmental data scientist. Matija joined as our Geospatial Engineer, while Gabby came on board as a Software Engineer, providing essential technical and software development support to our team. Additionally, Charlie joined us as our Head of Natural Capital, solidifying our promise to develop financing for natural capital projects in the UK and around the world. Finally, Siya, who began as an intern, grew into the role of Commercial Associate for Natural Capital. Each member brings invaluable expertise and passion, further enriching our capabilities to drive meaningful change.
We started the year with a team of 8 and have now grown to 13!

Key Partnerships Fueling Progress

Collective effort is more powerful than individual endeavours. That's why we prioritise strong partnerships as a crucial cornerstone in our quest for nature-centred solutions. This year, we collaborated with Arup & Knepp on a groundbreaking Rewilding R&D project—an initiative that aims to pioneer a protocol facilitating the sale of carbon credits at their true value, focusing on underexplored scrub areas essential to nature-based systems. Additionally, we've built partnerships with the Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest, Heal Rewilding, Nattergal, and Highlands Rewilding, all propelling innovative rewilding initiatives forward.

Recognition and Support

Our dedication to innovation was recognized through several grant and award victories. Notably, we secured £378K from the Innovate UK Smart Grant, accelerating the R&D necessary to make Sherwood a world-class monitoring and data platform for nature restoration projects. We aimed to use this grant to make tracking carbon removal performance more scalable, traceable, and profitable over time.
Additionally, we received £49k from the SBRI - Climate and Environmental Risk Analytics for Resilient Finance, £44k from the Palladium Challenge Fund, and £10k from the Future Woodlands Scotland Research & Innovation Grant, among others. These grants support our pioneering research and development efforts, merging technology, science, and nature to aid in the restoration of our planet.

Milestones and Unforgettable Moments

This year was punctuated by significant milestones. In July, we gathered for our first company team meeting in London, engaging in two days of fun activities. These sessions allowed us to deepen our connections, foster collaboration, and align our team’s shared purpose.
Among our biggest achievements was the launch of Sherwood 2.0 through a live webinar at the start of October. Leveraging valuable insights from our customers, we recognised the need to specialise our platform. Sherwood evolved into a nature-based project monitoring platform tailored to address the key challenges faced by land managers, project developers, and asset managers. This evolution continued with the introduction of new features just a month after its relaunch, and we are eager to continue expanding.

Driving Nature Restoration in the Carbon Markets

Our collective efforts have garnered the attention of customers across various segments of the carbon markets. This year, we’re proud to have sold 1,977 tonnes of proven carbon removal to corporations seeking high-quality carbon projects they can trust. Through our platform, Sherwood, we are now monitoring different nature-based projects consolidating their data into quantitative, visual, and tangible impact metrics at the highest granular level to future-proof and better communicate their value.
Most importantly, we have increased our pipeline to 113 Mt of carbon removal potential from projects we plan to support through development next year!

Strengthening Advisory Expertise

We have been determined to expand our advisory board, understanding that the right expertise and advice can make the difference between failure and success. It was with excitement that we welcomed Dr. Richard Templer to our board, enriching our strategic counsel and elevating our vision to new heights. We cannot wait to announce who will be joining us next year.
As we bid farewell to 2023, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our team, partners, customers, and supporters, who have played an instrumental role in our journey. Together, we've made significant strides toward a more sustainable future, yet our commitment remains steadfast. Here's to a new year filled with innovation, collaboration, and impactful change—a year where we draw closer to harnessing nature as our greatest ally, unlocking its value, and taking action to move forward.
Thank you for being a part of Treeconomy's incredible year.
We're geared up and ready for what lies ahead!
See you there!
Cheers,
The Treeconomy Team
